Embarkation

The embarkation process was quick and easy. We arrived a little before our scheduled time and moved through the process swiftly. Although I didn’t use an ECV (electric conveyance vehicle) on this cruise, cruisers who need one will find the rental process convenient, with plenty of nearby seating. Additionally, there’s a special waiting area for those requiring assistance with boarding. Inside the terminal, elevators are available to help guests reach the second level where embarkation continues.

Muster Process

The muster process was seamless. After boarding, passengers could enjoy lunch on the Lido Deck, or head to Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ, which was open and uncrowded. The brisket there is delicious! Once you’ve eaten, I recommend finding your muster station (listed on your boarding pass). Simply show up, have your boarding pass scanned, watch a quick demonstration, and you’re done. Gone are the days when everyone had to gather on deck and wait for hours to complete the muster drill.

Before setting sail, an emergency briefing is conducted, including a test of the ship’s horn. For those sensitive to loud noises, noise-canceling headphones are recommended, and the staff does provide a warning beforehand. Notably, Carnival Cruise Lines, including the Horizon, is certified as sensory inclusive by KultureCity, which means staff are trained to support guests with cognitive and sensory sensitivities. Sensory bags are also available, and certain experiences are labeled with symbols indicating if noise-canceling headphones might be needed. Although my son doesn’t usually wear headphones, I appreciated being able to prepare him for potential loud sounds.

Entertainment & Activities

The Horizon offers a wide range of activities for all types of guests. Parties were lively, but there were also plenty of quiet spaces throughout the ship. For casino lovers, there’s a sizable casino on Deck 4 where smoking is permitted only for active players. Those seeking relaxation can enjoy the Serenity Deck, which features numerous loungers, two hot tubs, and healthy food options. Entertainment venues include the Liquid Lounge, hosting big shows like Playlist Productions, comedy acts, Family Feud, Love and Marriage, and bingo. The Limelight Lounge also offers comedy shows and transforms into a nightclub after 11 PM, staying open until 2:30 AM.

Dining

Dining options were plentiful. Bars like Piano Bar 88, Alchemy Bar, and the Atrium Bar serve drinks day and night. For food, the ship features both complimentary and paid options, such as the Steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi, Bonsai Teppanyaki, JiJi’s Asian Kitchen, Seafood Shack, and Cucina del Capitano. Some venues, like JiJi’s and Cucina del Capitano, offer free lunch options and charge modestly for dinner. Free options include the main dining rooms, Lido Marketplace, Pizza del Capitano, and the deli. While room service is no longer free, a complimentary continental breakfast is available.

Passengers with dietary restrictions or allergies are well-supported. Staff members are knowledgeable and available to discuss menu options and allergens. Be sure to note any dietary needs during online check-in, and remind your dining room staff onboard.

Accessibility & Challenges

Overall, the Horizon is fairly accommodating for guests with disabilities, mobility issues, or sensory sensitivities. Here are some highlights and challenges:

  • Strengths:

    • Sensory-inclusive certification and staff training.

    • Accessible areas and accommodations for mobility aids.

  • Challenges:

    • Accessible restrooms were difficult to operate.

    • Ocean Plaza chairs were not ideal for larger passengers.

    • Dining room spaces were tight, although better than in the past.

    • Low toilets made rising difficult.

    • Staterooms had a step up/down into bathrooms and balconies.

Drawbacks

While my experience was overwhelmingly positive, there were a few downsides:

  • Elevators: The smart elevator system, which assigns an elevator after selecting a destination, was often slow, especially on embarkation day. Elevators sometimes arrived full, causing frustration.

  • SeaDay Brunch: Signing in through the Carnival Hub app places you in a virtual queue, but the congestion around the dining room can be overwhelming. Sensitive guests may find this difficult despite staff recommendations to wait on Deck 4.

  • Imax Theater: The theater experience was popular, but the ticketing and check-in process was inefficient, leading to long lines and congestion.

  • Climate Issues: Hot spots and high humidity made some areas uncomfortable, with slick floors causing a few falls. Staff worked hard to mop up, but it was a recurring issue.

Final Thoughts

Despite minor inconveniences, I absolutely loved my experience on the Carnival Horizon. The ship's entertainment, dining, and staff made it a fantastic choice for cruising. Whether you're traveling with family, friends, or as a solo guest, the Horizon has something for everyone.

Would I sail on it again? Absolutely!
